English Tenses Lesson
1. Introduction
Tenses are an essential part of English grammar that indicate the time of an action or event. Understanding tenses helps you to communicate clearly and accurately whether you are talking about the past, present, or future. This lesson will introduce you to the main types of tenses and how to use them correctly.
2. Explanation
English has three main time frames: Past, Present, and Future. Each of these has four aspects: simple, continuous (progressive), perfect, and perfect continuous.
- Simple Tense: Describes facts, habits, or general truths. Example: I eat breakfast at 8 am.
- Continuous Tense: Describes ongoing actions. Example: She is studying now.
- Perfect Tense: Describes completed actions with relevance to another time. Example: They have finished their homework.
- Perfect Continuous Tense: Describes how long an action has been happening until a certain point. Example: I have been working here for five years.
Summary of the 12 basic tenses:

- Past Continuous: She was cooking when I called.
- Past Perfect: They had left before I arrived.
- Past Perfect Continuous: I had been waiting for 30 minutes.
- Simple Future: He will arrive tomorrow.
- Future Continuous: We will be traveling at 5 pm.
- Future Perfect: By next week, she will have finished the project.
- Future Perfect Continuous: They will have been working here for two years.
4. Vocabulary
- Action verb: A word that expresses an action. Example: run, eat, study.
- Aspect: The type of action (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous).
- Time frame: When the action happens (past, present, or future).
- Relevance: The connection between two points of time.
- Ongoing: Something that is continuing or happening now.
- Completed: An action that has finished.
- Habitual: An action that happens regularly.
